A new edition of the study Factors For Success in German E-Commerce, says customers decide within very few clicks whether they will remain on a web site or not. However, the study also gives a few hints on how to retain user interest. The study – Erfolgsfaktoren im E-commerce – Deutschlands Top Online shops Vol. 2 – emphasises it is vital to provide the customer with ‘comprehensive and informative product descriptions’. It adds that the web site should also give ‘understandable and clearly presented information on delivery terms and conditions.’ Research has shown that 62 percent of customers regard these two criteria as being of absolute importance. At third place (49.9 per cent) on the list of priority criteria is ‘a well-arranged start page’, which customers regard as the online shop window. read more…

Very recently Britain’s Home Retail Group recruited Jacqueline de Rojas to beef up its digital game with the aim of driving forward their multi-channel business. At the same time, market researchers Comscore analysed Europe’s three largest e-commerce markets and identified the three largest click-scores: in the UK Amazon is the undisputed leader with 25.9 million visitors; they were followed by the Home Retail Group (which includes Argos, Homebase and Habitat) with 11.3 million, and the Apple pages with 10.9 million. read more…

German home improvement chain Max Bahr has completely revamped its web presence to embrace service functions on offer and improve the appearance. The underlying driver for the move is to focus the group’s strategic direction by placing customer orientation and service quality at the forefront. Marketing manager Frau Wiebke Krone said: “When customers make plans for a new project, they look on the internet for advice and assistance. The BHB Federal German Association of Home Improvement Stores and Building Material Retailers will hold its 13th International Building Market Congress at Berlin’s Estrel Hotel on December 5-6. The years-long controversy in Germany about the merits or demerits of the MyHammer find-a-tradesman website, has been laid to rest by a new agreement between the portal and the Hamburg house-building tradesmen’s guild, the Bau-innung. On 16 January the Hamburg Bau-innung became the first regional German guild to announce an official cooperative agreement with the MyHammer web portal. The agreement provides for enhanced terms and conditions for guild members when using the web platform to bid for contracts, and the online trade directory. read more…

Internet sales of home improvement products are on the up and up. A recent market study by Suberg Strategy Consultants of Munich indicates that on-line sales of home improvement products will rise from their present five percent to around 20 percent by 2020, and concludes that this must result in a massive reduction in the provision of unprofitable retail floor space. read more…
