These monster tunnelling machines are 440 metres long, weigh 2,700 tons, are powered by ten motors, equipped with 62 roller bits and require an unbelievable 3,500 kW energy to drive them forward. The huge machines built by Herrenknecht and known by the work force as Gabi I, Gabi II, Heidi and Sissi, are engaged on the project of the century – the construction of a railway tunnel under the St. Gotthard range and the Swiss Alps. When the job is done, they will have shifted an unimaginable 28 million tons of rock following which workers will install 190,000 railway tie-bars, plus pipes for 2,800 kilometres of power supply and data transfer cables through the world’s longest railway tunnel.
