Two DIY Lifetime Awards

For the first time, the European DIY-Retail Association has made two simultaneous DIY-Lifetime-Awards in this, the eighth year of the Award’s history: the recipients are Karl-Heinz Knoke and Dr. Gerd Müller-van Ißem, recognised for their lifetime achievements. Previous winners included such retail personalities as Otmar Hornbach (Hornbach Baumärkte), Manfred Maus (Obi), Karlheinz Essl (Baumax) and Klaus Fischer (Fischerwerke). read more…

Kingfisher Seeks International DIY Growth

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, the chairman of the British-owned home improvement retail group Kingfisher said the group is on the lookout for more international growth, in particular at locations in Poland. The home improvement group would be interested in acquiring up to 15 sites, should these be available. read more…

bauMax opens two Eastern European stores

On 19 March, home improvement retail store chain bauMax opened two new 15,000 square metre stores, one each in Prague and Sofia. The chain has had a retail presence in the Czech Republic for 21 years, where it now has 24 stores employing 1,300 persons – representing the largest number of foreign subsidiaries in the bauMax Group. The Austrian DIY-chain generates about half its turnover in conjunction with local suppliers. read more…

Banks Help bauMax

 

Just before Christmas a consortium of banks led by the Raiffeisenbank agreed to support the restructuring of the bauMax group, thus ensuring its future, said a spokesman for the DIY-retailer. read more…

bauMax Restructures

 

With immediate effect Michael Hürter now has total responsibility for the operational business of bauMax, Austria’s leading DIY retail chain. The surprise announcement was made by Baumax AG board chairman Martin Essl at the recent BHB International DY Retail Conference. Herr Hürter, 49, joined bauMax in July this year; he has many years experience in retail management and in senior positions with such companies as Aldi and Lidl. He was also CEO Europe for Plus and a member of the Tengelmann Group management board. More recently, he was senior vice president for the Papyrus Group of companies. read more…
