TÜV Rheinland: DINplus Quality Mark for Hand Tools

The range of hand tools on sale is enormous and consumers searching for a particular kind of tool are faced with a plethora of choice, making the final decision very difficult. However, research has shown that there are very significant differences in the qualities and quality of hand tools; there are frequent criticisms with respect to finish, quality, effectiveness and manipulation. The highly respected independent technical quality assessment bureau TÜV Rheinland has decided to provide guidance by awarding the DINplus and DIN Certco quality mark, to tools that it has checked and found satisfactory in all respects.

Thomas Weigand is head of the Hardliners technical assessment for TÜV Rheinland: “We have found that — particularly with respect to hand tools — when it comes to quality, the promises made by manufacturers do not always hold good. That is why we have joined with our Certco subsidiary to develop a test programme that goes well beyond basic Industrial Safety Standards. This hand tool test programme also embraces quality and user handling characteristics.”

In addition to checking the tool itself, the testers also examine the manufacturing process and premises. The tool can only bear the DINplus quality mark if it and the manufacturer pass all the tests. Said Herr Weigand: “We know from our many years of experience what is required of a high quality hand tool if it is to provide long-term satisfaction, and this is what our comprehensive tests will determine.”
