Firewood and Christmas Trees

Even those determined to ignore Christmas will by now have noted that it has arrived – so there is no escape. The shops are full of customers right up to closing time, with last minute shoppers whichever way you look. This matches with the latest HDE Association of German Retailers’ survey, which reports last week’s sales as being slightly above those of the previous two weeks: HDE chief executive Stefan Genth: “This year, last-minute sales will be very strong.” The HDE had forecast that this year’s November and December sales would be 1.5 percent above those of the comparable period for 2010. That would be commensurate with total sales of 78 billion Euros.

Those with no taste for elbowing their way through the shops make their purchases through the internet, which is no doubt the reason why on-line sales are booming with record numbers. This year the HDE forecasts Christmas internet sales of 6.5 billion Euros, which would be a considerable increase on the 5.9 billion Euros recorded last year.

Another good way of minimising pre-Christmas stress while providing friends, family and relatives with a pleasurable and relaxing Christmas ambience, can be found in the garden: a fir tree, or some logs for the fire are just perfect. Anyonw needing a decent handsaw can obtain one from exhibitors Julius-Berger-Werkzeugfabrik, Haunstetter-Sägenfabrik or Draptertools.  Garden and tree-pruning cutters can always be found in the Betakut and Ribimex catalogues. But those preferring a traditional woodcutter’s axe will find one from Helko, Vaughan or Pinie Lubná.
